ASA FOWLER 1811-1885

I research and write articles primarily about my Union County, SC ancestors.  I help many people with their family research but I do not usually devote the hours and hours it takes to write and post articles online for others.   As much as I would like to do that, I have material enough for at least a hundred or more of my own articles and not enough time to accomplish all that I wish to do.

Two weeks ago, it was brought to my attention that there was a Fowler family Bible for sale.  It would have been against all odds that this Bible was connected to my family, but my interest was piqued and I sought out the volume.

It was not a Bible ever owned my Fowlers.  It had belonged to Asa Fowler and I did not recognize any of the names nor the lineage from the family pages of births, marriages, and deaths.  Nothing about the family was familiar.

I decided to research just a little into this Asa Fowler fellow.  Much to my surprise, I was looking at a very prominent, well educated, and already well researched Fowler line!

I was fortunate enough to also obtain a first edition of The Fowler Family, written by a descendant of this family and published in 1883.

I will soon add more information about the Asa Fowler family, along with wonderful photos of the two books.

I have traced this line to present day in hopes of finding a direct male Fowler descendant willing to yDNA test.  The following is a brief descendancy chart from the earliest known ancestor to almost present day.  I have omitted the names of living descendants for privacy reasons, but would love to hear from anyone interested in pursuing genetic research into this line.

  1. My husbands grandfather was Stephen Joseph Fowler born 1862 in Fulton Co. Ga. Stephen Joseph’s father was killed in the Civil War we have been unable to find a first name for this man so our research for my husband’s Fowler line stops with his grandfather. We do know that our unknown Fowler married Martha Jane McHargue/ McCard, Some McHargues changed their name to McCard about Civil War time. I noticed a Joseph in your Fowler list.

    1. Hi Wilma,
Thanks for you comment. Did Stephen Joseph Fowler ever live in Missouri? I’ve taken a quick look at what I believe to be your husband’s family line. IF you can find a direct Fowler male from this line, I suggest joining the Fowler Surname Project and ordering a yDNA test kit. Please send your email address and I’ll try to help you with your Fowlers.

  2. Hello – Asa Fowler is my great-great-grandfather – following the lines of Asa’s son William Plumer Fowler, and his son William Plumer Fowler, who is my grandfather. My father is Richard Fowler – my aunt is Clara Fowler. I have a somewhat extensive family tree that follows the lines of my Fowler family – the first of which was Philip who came to Ipswich, MA in the early 1600’s from England. Fortunately there are several books written about the Fowler family, however the family tree really shows the many New England families that are all connected! Thank you!! Joan Fowler Sullivan

    1. Hi Joan, Thanks so much for you comments! Since I wrote the Asa Fowler article, I was able to find a direct Fowler great great grandson who was willing to yDNA test. Even though your Fowler family had been in the USA since the early 1600s, it was a “new” genetic Fowler line, meaning that it was a line previously unknown and untested until recently by the Fowler Surname Project. Please email me at debfowler@aol.com and I’ll send more information that we have learned from the genetic testing. I am so very glad that you got in contact with me. Deb
