Charles Ellis Fowler was born in 1828, son of Thomas Gillman Fowler, son of Godfrey Fowler, son of Henry Ellis Fowler.

Charles Ellis Fowler enlisted in the South Carolina 18th Infantry Company B on Feb 22, 1862 at John’s Island near Charleston, SC.

He became a Brigade Ambulance Teamster (or Driver) on July 25, 1864.

There was a battle in Petersburg on April 2, 1865 where Charles Ellis Fowler suffered a gunshot wound (vulnus sclopeticum). Confusing hospital records indicate that the injury was to his right foot, right leg, or left leg. Admitted to the hospital, he was captured at the Fairgrounds Post Hospital at Petersburg, Virginia the next day… April 3, 1865.

Charles Ellis Fowler was a Prisoner of War when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Lt. General U.S. Grant on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox Court House.

Two days later — on April 11, 1865 — Charles Ellis Fowler was transferred to the Field Flying Hospital. This hospital was part of the 24th Corps Union Army of the James, which had been formed in April 1864 for the purpose of taking Richmond, Virginia and Petersburg, Virginia

On April 14, 1865, he was admitted to the CSA General Hospital in Farmville, Virginia. This hospital was organized in 1862 by Dr. H.D. Taliaferro. For anyone interested, I highly recommend History of the Confederate General Hospital Located at Farmville Va. 1862-1865 by Dr. James L. White. (published 1916)

He was next transferred, on May 1 or May 8, 1865, eleven miles away to the Point of Rocks Hospital in Chester, Chesterfield County, Virginia. established in 1864 during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign of the American Civil War.

Charles Ellis Fowler eventually made his way home to his family. In spite of a gunshot injury, he was one of the lucky ones. He survived.

Charles Ellis Fowler and his wife Margaret Mary White (1836–1915) had the following children:

  • Emma Fowler (1854–1922)
