On August 1, 1861, Simeon Fowler of Union County, South Carolina won the most important lottery of his life: a Surgeon at a Confederate Army Hospital signed a Certificate of Disability that led to his discharge from service in the Confederate Army and sent him home to his family.

His brother, James W. Fowler, was not so lucky. James was shot in battle and died in a hospital near Warrenton, Virginia. His wife Caroline and their children back home in South Carolina waited in vain for his return.

Two brothers. Two outcomes. Each man had his own journey, his own story.

Every man who enlisted in the Confederate Army followed his own path that could — and often did — lead to his death on a battlefield, or death by disease in a makeshift army hospital, or his capture and imprisonment by the enemy.

The lucky ones made it home alive.  The unlucky ones came home in pine boxes, or were buried in an unfamiliar land far from loved ones and the homes they left behind.

I have decided to tell the stories of the Fowler men from Union County, South Carolina who were Confederate Soldiers. Right or wrong, they fought in the Civil War for a cause they believed in, and they deserve to be remembered.

  1. One of my 3X great grandfathers served as a Union Chaplin with the 13th Tenn. regiment. I would love to read any stories you come up on about the conflicts between the two sides within family units should it be appropriate within the story to include such details. I am, once again, in awe of your talents and skills…ty
