Elias Fowler was the son of Lemuel H. Fowler, son of John Holter “the Hatter” Fowler, son of Henry Ellis Fowler.

On April 14, 1861, at the Union County Court House, Elias Fowler joined W.J.T. Glen’s Company, 5th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers. This unit later became known as the 5th Regiment SC Infantry Company E. He was mustered into service on June 4, 1861 in Orangeburg SC.

Elias Fowler’s name was canceled on the roll. There are no other military records found for him. He may have had physical limitations that prevented him from serving.

He was listed in the 1880 census as “crippled, maimed, bedridden or otherwise disabled.”

There is documentation of his life back in Unionville after the war and there will be a forthcoming article.

Elias Fowler may have been married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Burgess (1843– before 1870), and after her death, to Charlotte (b. 1833).

The children of Elias Fowler and Elizabeth Burgess:

  • Isadora Fowler (1857–)
  • Sarah Fowler (1860–1922)
  • Ramoth L. Fowler (1866–1924)
  • Catherine “Kattie” Fowler (1866–1919)

Elias Fowler died in 1908 and was laid to rest at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesville, SC.

  1. Hi! Do you know what became of Isadora Fowler? An Isabella Fowler is my 4th great grandmother and I suspect that she and Isadora are one in the same. She went by Izzie. I cannot locate an Isabella Fowler in the 1870 or 1860 census (1855+/- ~ 1926), but I did find an Elizabeth Lowery in the Pinckney area on the 1880 census with 4 young kids, widowed by James Lowery. It has been so difficult finding information on this branch of my tree! My 2nd great grandmother’s mother died when she was 3 and she was passed around to different family members until she married at 16 I believe. She didn’t talk much about her childhood or her premarital days to my mom. I don’t know if you’ll even get this message, but if you do and you know anything, please let me know! 🙂
